Now rooting required for tethering on android phones for sprint?

My dad who uses a Google Nexus from Samsung used to be able to be to use wifi tethering with an app but now Sprint locked down that feature so they could charge you for it. Now for this new app to work he needs to root his phone but is it really worth it?
