weird network usage

Lately at work i've been trying to narrow down some random "mishaps" that seem to slip by. There's close to 200 or 300 employees with little to no security restrictions on shares and network drives, but somehow im still supposed to prevent databases from being deleted and or edited. Can anyone help me with a good way to monitor network traffic preferably in linux because i hate windows. Ideally i would like to see where users are going on the local network in real time.
