Proxy / VPN Setup

hello All,
Just found the forum and so far I'm loving what I see. Seen a couple tut that I need to read and find more information. Enough of that I wanted to ask you guys a question. This must be a n00b question but for someone that is learning by himself and teaching him self I would like to learn how to setup or read on setting up the proper way of using proxy and a vpn.
I keep hearing and reading that most people that are in security or that are trying to surf anon they use proxy and vpns.
is there a tut or video on how to setup this correct. I'm willing to learn and not have anyone setup for me. I think the best way is learning yourself.
