I think it would be nice that postings alternated between white and off white so that you can tell more easily where one ends and the next begins. I'm not a big fan of the nesting, but I think this would make it easier to follow.

Is this custom software or is it some pre-packaged forum software?

I'm not trying to second guess you, but why wasn't a more full featured, easier to read forum used?
