How much free space on a HDD is needed.

I've been told that for a computer to run really smooth on vista you need at LEAST 1/4 of the drive free, regardless of the size of the drive. I know the page file in vista can be a monster but that seems way too much. Any thoughts on how much space is needed for the computer to run smoothly?
