Monitors, How Big is Big Enough?

I will be purchasing a new computer monitor shortly and was looking for some suggestions.
From my experience, I have always found a 20" to be adequate. I would like to purchase something bigger. My question, how big is big enough? I'm not interested in overkill. I will fairly close to the screen. At most, I will be 7 feet away.
