New, need pointed in the right direction

I am new to this and not asking for someone to do anything for me, just would like pointed in the right direction. My main interest is in gaining access of another computer remotely, just want to know the basics and where I should start to teach myself this. I have had some programming classes but they were a few years ago, other then that I just have a basic knowledge of computers. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
