Starting out!?

My knowledge is very limited. I worked for a while as a Geek Squad agent a couple years ago, (please don't hate me, it's in the past now) so I have basic knowledge as far as hardware goes. I run Ubuntu, but I'm not great at all when it comes to terminal, or anything too technical.
I want to understand how my computer works. I'm your average Jo that downloads everything in sight, and then freaks out because he has no Idea whats going on in the background. Then I run MRI and hope it fixes everything. I don't want to be that guy anymore!
I really want to learn programming. It has always been something that has interested me..
Where do I start!?
