Headfirst?

Right now I'm using Windows XP and hate it. I'm going to use Ubuntu as my distro but I'm wondering if I should go in headfirst with the basics and learn as I go, or read up on as much as I can before converting. I've heard a few mixed opinions, but I want to know what SX thinks.
