Security on an unsecured wifi network

I use an open (unsecured) wifi network with a sqiud proxy authentication system in my school
And i am aware that data sent between my computer and other servers are kinda visible on the network and someone with the know-how can intercept my packet and get my passwords.
How can it protect myself on this network, both my browsing data and my local files.
