Neophyte with an insatiable appetite

If I was so inclined to try something on my own home computer such as creating a user account and giving it Administrator rights then forgetting a password for that account. I want to access the Administrators password from a guest account and then get the SAM file and try my best at cracking it. How would one go about doing that and what are the best methods and tools?
