Stephen Wolfram was born on August 29, 1959 in London, England, UK. He is a British scientist who is known worldwide as the creator of Mathematica (a widespread computational software) and Wolfram Alpha (a knowledge engine).

He led the development of the computer algebra system SMP (Symbolic Manipulation Program) in the Caltech physics department during 1979–1981.

He received a Ph.D. in particle physics from the California Institute of Technology at age 20.
